How do I read the live radar?
The live radar displays colours that represent rainfall intensity – light blue for drizzle, green for light rain, yellow for moderate rain and red for heavy downpours. The loop shows movement, so you can track which direction a storm or shower is heading. For more detail, zoom into your suburb or refer to the Bureau of Meteorology’s radar site list.
Which cities have dedicated radar coverage?
Major centres such as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and the Gold Coast are covered by dedicated BOM radars. Brisbane’s radar at Mount Stapylton covers the metro area, while Noosa is served by the Marburg radar. Check the BOM radar page for location‑specific products and update times.
Does weather radar show rain that hasn’t reached the ground yet?
Radar detects precipitation aloft – rain or hail that is already falling. It cannot forecast future rain, but the movement of echoes helps you judge when a shower might arrive at your location.
Why does the radar sometimes show false echoes?
Objects such as hills, buildings, aircraft and even birds can produce false returns. The BOM filters most of these, but occasional speckles appear – especially near the coast or during clear skies.
