What is the climate like across Peru’s regions?
Coastal Lima – the capital – stays mild year-round, with a persistent sea fog (garúa) from June to August that can make Lima feel quite chilly. Summers (December to March) bring clearer skies and warmer days, often reaching 28°C. Further inland, Cusco and the Sacred Valley have a dry season from May to September: crisp mornings, sunny afternoons, and virtually no rain. The rainy season runs October to April, peaking in December and January, with heavy afternoon downpours. The Amazon basin to the east is hot and humid all year, with temperatures around 30°C and rainfall heaviest from November to March.
When should I visit Peru for the best weather?
For the Inca Trail and highland treks, aim for the dry winter months of May to September. Cusco’s skies are clear and nights are cold, but daytime warmth is comfortable. Lima is best visited in summer (December to March) when the sun breaks through the fog. October and December are transitional: October signals the start of rains in the Andes, while December is still a popular time to see Cusco before the wettest January–February period. For the Amazon, the drier months June to August are slightly less humid and more bearable.
Does it ever snow in Peru?
Yes, above about 4,000 metres in the high Andes, particularly during the dry winter months. Cusco (3,400 m) rarely sees snow, but rain can turn to sleet in heavy storms. Lima and the coast never get snow.
What is Lima’s weather like month by month?
Lima sees two distinct seasons: summer (Dec–Mar) with average highs of 26–28 °C and clear afternoons, and winter (Jun–Aug) when clouds and drizzle keep temperatures around 15–19 °C. September to November and April to May are transition months with moderate conditions.
Is October a good month to visit Cusco?
October marks the start of the rainy season in Cusco, so you can expect afternoon showers and cloud. Mornings are often fine, and crowds are smaller than peak months. It’s still a workable time if you’re flexible with wet weather.
